Xingyu is a PhD candidate in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of British Columbia. She currently studies the natural evolution of enzymes in biosynthetic pathways by resurrecting the ancestral sequences of the protein of interest. Her passion for evolutionary biochemistry led her to co-write a review around protein evolvability, published in the journal “Trends in Biomedical Sciences”. Before her graduate studies, Xingyu had been part of an academic spinoff and a startup company. Having seen the transformation of a scientific finding to a real-world application first-hand, Xingyu learned that successful scientific communication is crucial for bridging interdisciplinary gaps and facilitating productive conservations in the life sciences. Amazed by the power of scientific communication, Xingyu aspires to help translate research into applications as a science writer.
